Night terrors are a disorder of arousal and affect 25% of children, usually between the ages of 3-5 years. The event is like a storm of neural emissions in which the child experiences intense flight or fight sensations. It can be extremely disturbing, but is not dangerous. Like sleepwalking and bedwetting, night terrors are experienced in stage 4 of deep sleep, and often run in families. Fatigue and psychological stress may also play a role in their occurrence. Hypnotic suggestions for lighter calm and comfortable sleep can improve this condition.
